Idafect for Pierrot Ensemble with Percussion (2014)

Idafect is a nonce word which indicates a piece with no direct programmatic or extramusical narrative, akin to the title “Sonata” or “String Quartet.” This Idafect draws upon influences of Renaissance and early Baroque sonatas, specifically a slow-fast-slow-fast tempo structure. An eight-chord pattern flows throughout the work, and the rapid introductory passages in the piano recall flourishes and ornaments of improvisatory harpsichord technique. The piece draws attention to the use of virtuosity to create color with a focus on texture rather than melodic content.
